Where Do I Start?

That is the question, isn't it?  While recently exploring the National Writing Project's Digital Is site, I came across an interesting way to consider it. Kim Jaxon, an assistant professor of English at CSU, Chico and member of the Northern California Writing Project offers this:

"I’d like to take a small step towards exploring the question “where do I start?” when thinking about new technologies. But instead of leading with something that may cause varying degrees of anxiety, I’d like you to consider something more positive first: Think about something you’ve learned to do well. Perhaps you are a proficient baker, mechanic, soccer coach, bargain shopper, or musician?

I’ll give you a moment.

Now ask: How did I learn to do that or become that person? What resources and material conditions mattered as I developed an identity around this activity? What spaces mattered? What mentoring did I receive? How did I learn to be a part of the discourse community that surrounds that activity?

Another moment.

When I ask students to answer these questions, it is because I want them to think about learning, particularly the social nature of learning. I also want them to remember that learning to be a certain kind of person—a person who plays the guitar or a person who writes—is made up of a complex ecology of mentors, activities, spaces, tools, and language. Even as we become mentors ourselves in areas of interest, we often realize that we’re never really done learning how to be this person, never really done thinking, improving, or innovating.

My hope would be that you could take this feeling of competence in some task--combined with an understanding that learning to do something you feel good about is complicated--and apply that to your approach to learning about digital spaces and tools. What resources might you need? What spaces matter? Who could function as a mentor? Where could you start?"

Please respond to any or all of the questions from Jaxon's take on starting.

Today we read our latest published stories to another first grade classroom. We heard kids using repeated phrases, rule of three, onomatopoeia, dialogue, important lists, and strong words to tell details. We will continue our study of mentor authors and strengthening our narrative writing before we move on to expository pieces. The kids did a great job sharing and listening. Repeated reading and studying of mentor authors and modeling the writing strategies has helped improve our writing.

Yesterday I had a substitute teacher because I was participating in a science curriculum meeting. So today I had to play catch up and so did the kids. It is so important to read every day to and with first graders. All the groups met with either me or on their own. We read and read and read some more.
On Wednesday, we are having a writers' celebration with another first grade class. It's a first!
Then the writers in my class will get a seed notebook and pen to take home. Hopefully they will return after 4 days off with lots of ideas for narrative writing.

Your Classroom

What do you think about using technology in the classroom? Do you use it already? Do you have concerns? Do you foresee yourself using it in the future? Why or why not?

What Would You Like From Me?

Welcome to Summer Institute 2008. As your technology liaison, I'd like to hear about what you most want to learn. Based on your feedback, my June 30th meeting with you can incorporate a mini-lesson that meets most of your needs. I say most because we have to be democratic. Some of you are more computer savvy than me, while others are technology challenged; so we will go with the majority. I can help with PowerPoint, web resources, pod casting, and anything in between. What are your ideas? What are you most interested in learning?

How's it Going?

Hello everyone! How is everything going in your new school year? How is implementing the ideas we learned at the institute going for you? Are your colleagues on board or are you hitting a brick wall trying to communicate your great ideas? I was pleasantly surprised and my fellow colleagues in 7th grade are going to try out the workshop approach with me! I also plan to implement and hold writing circles every Friday. Things are going great, I'd love to hear how things are going for you....when should we do our first face to face follow-up?

Continuing Support

After taking stock of Tuesday's Gallery Walk, a number of recurring themes surfaced. One of those was the idea of professional support beyond the Summer Institute. Would you be interested in having support after this class? What would be the ideal way to implement it? Should there be face-to-face meetings at mutually agreeable locations, perhaps host schools? When and how often would this support occur? What would the agenda be for each meeting? Are there other ways to provide support? What are your ideas?

Research Report

This past week, you were asked to search the internet and find writing resources that could be used in conjunction with your teaching. As a community of learners, it is important to share with others what we have learned. Please post an overview of a source you think is worthwhile. Explain some of its features and its usefulness to the writing process. Include the web address starting with www, not http, so that readers can copy and paste it into their address bars.
